The truth is, people hate claiming defeat because it makes them look bad. Many leaders make up cover stories to look good because the public humiliation is bad. As the saying goes, "If you don't want to read it, see it or hear, don't say it" (anonymous), shows how people should act. Throughout history, events such as The Cuban Missile Criss and The Watergate Scandal have lead citizens to wonder if the leaders in the country are worthy to be "their" leade rs.
JFK, the brave leader
T he Cuban Missile Crisis consisted in a tense, 13 day political standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear- armed Soviet Union missiles in Cuba. President John Kennedy notified Americans about the presence of the missiles. He explained his decision to enact a naval blockade around Cuba during his notification. John F. Kennedy made it clear that the U.S. was prepared to use military force if necessary.
Since JFK was scared for Cuba because it was a huge threat, the naval blockade was put. Unfortunately, a problem occurred. Everyone was ready to blame the president of The United States. The haters were saying that they didn't trust JFK anymore and were putting things in other people's mind. As everyone knows, only a great leader stands up for his or her mistakes. President Kennedy indeed was an amazing leader and stood up. On national television he announced his error and asked for pardon.
Nixon and his cover stories
The Watergate Scandal was historical event that made many people not trust the government. In 1972, when President Nixon was running for reelection, his Committee broke into the Democratic National Committee's Watergate headquarters. The Committee stole copies confidential documents and started to bug the office phones. A little after, The Committee hid many microphones in the Oval Office. When they were planting a new one, a security caught them and called the police.
The people caught were sent to trial and found connected to the president. Upon national television, President Nixon swore off not being involved in anything. Several times he was being lead up to but he would make a cover story after another. It was found that President Nixon had given "hush money" to The Committee. A little after, President Nixon gave up all of the tapes he had and resigned from office.
If President Nixon would have acted like JFK, and asked for pardon the first time, this "scandal" would have not occurred. For instance, "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything" (Mark Twain), demonstrates what President Nixon should have thought.

Defeat vs. victory
Nobody likes to lose because winning sounds better. The picture on the left demonstrates how losing and winning is like a dice, 50/50 chance.

As great as it victory may sound, victory feels the same as defeat when something bad is done. A lot of people win on a daily basis due to influences. Winning involves hard work and fairness. In today's society, influences have changed the meaning of hard work. For instance, " You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it"(Margaret Thatcher), shows how victory is not earned easy. The real definition of winning is fairness with no influences. Many people win a certain election because they know someone with political influences. Winning something will always involve any type of work.
Defeat, in the other hand, can be felt good or bad. For example, " It is the journey that matters. Not the destination" (anonymous), shows how defeat should be looked at. Many people always complain on how other people cheated. The reality is that they probably did not enjoy it as much as the loser. Trying to lose on purpose is bad because their is no purpose to it. People should try their best until the end because giving up is for "real" losers.
