Favorite things
I give this book a 4.7 in a scale from 1-5. I really like how the author made a great plot. Jacob, the main character, has to start a new journey the day his grandfather died. I admire the author's way of putting everything in its place. Jacob is a normal rich teenager that will discover his ability of seeing monsters through the course of his "journey". If Jacob would have believed his grandfather, there would be no motivation in the story. In books, the main character will always have that motivation. Jacob's motivation was his grandfather.
Jacob felt like he needed to find a remnant of his grandfather. When he got to the destination, he met new friends, the peculiars. I like how later on in the story, the author adds some love to Jacob's life. "I'll go , but I'm not going to kiss her"(Riggs 240). I think Jacob felt very weird kissing his grandfather's girlfriend from the past. Throughout his journey, he meets the real her and realizes how his grandfather fell in love with her.
The climax shocked me and I thought it was the best part of the story. " I trusted him once, I'm not going to make that mistake again"(Riggs 297). When Jacob's grandfather died, Jacob was sent to a psychologist. He would always tell him about the "monsters he saw. This psychologist gave him good advice therefore everyone thought he was a good man. When Jacob was with the peculiars confronting the wight, the wight changed into the psychologist. I loved this part because it took me off guard and Jacob realized that he had been watched since he was in 8th grade. From the climax, I learned that others should pay attention to minor things.

Least favorite
I gave the book a 4.7 due to few minor dislikes in the book. I did not like the father's reaction when Jacob was going to leave with the peculiars. I felt like it was done too fast and it he should have waited for him to be in a better state. His parents were rich but had many disadvantages. Jacob's mother did not care about her son therefore she let him go to the island. "Two needy children to worry about"( Riggs 67). His mother just wanted her life back. At first when I heard this I thought the father would be better. I was wrong because Jacob's father turned out to be a alcoholic when a "better" birdwatcher came to the island. This pretty much sums up the 0.3 that kept the book from a 5.
Recommend the book?
Of course! Overall, this book was the best book I had ever read. At first, I thought it would be very boring because of the word "Peregrine". The book started to get very interesting after a few pages of reading it. I would recommend this book to children older than 9 or 10. It seems to be a good book for this age group due to the plot. Children under 8 can also read it, but I feel like children older than 9 will understand it better because there are some parts which might be a little confusing. Many children ages 9-13, love books involving "monsters" therefore they would love this book. The book can also be for adults because it is very interesting.
